In the spirit of keeping The BBDC Experience as colourful and up-to-date as possible, I have decided to open this blog to guest contributions from past and present BBDC students. Unfortunately I don't know that many people who currently learn driving, so if you are a current student/"fresh graduate" of BBDC and would like to contribute to this blog please leave a comment with your  email address.

Our first guest blogger Timothy is 20 this year and was a student of BBDC from 5th August 2012 to 7th March 2013. Unlike me, Timothy learnt manual instead of auto, and managed to pass on his first try. Congratulations and welcome to the "motoring society" (do they still write this on the result slip?! It was on mine... LOL.)!

So.. I recently just completed the course at BBDC and got my class 3 license. To anyone thinking about taking up driving, i would definitely reccomend taking it up from a driving school instead of a private instructor, especially if you're thinking of taking manual car lessons(I've heard that there arent many good private driving instructors for manual out there). My experience with bbdc was a pleasant one, with the only painful bit being the wallet and time.

To start out, BBDC makes you go through compulsory theory lessons which are quite frankly a waste of time cos the instructors conducting the lessons don't really teach you anything that is important for the BTT or FTT. But just bear with 4 of those lessons and read your own stuff while in class! The test practices are a must before the theory tests, especially the FTT which has really vague questions, cos they pretty much give you the answers for the test. A word of advice, be sure to book your FTT quickly after passing your BTT so you can complete your whole driving course faster!

After completing all your theory lessons and passing the BTT, you'll need to apply for your PDL at the traffic police counter on the second floor of bbdc, after which you'll be able to start attending driving lessons. BBDC has 3 schemes, the default non-fixed group/instructor scheme, the fixed group scheme and the fixed instructor scheme. By default, you're assigned to this group of instructors (4-5 of them) and each time you book, one instructor from this group will take you for your lessons. However, if the instructors are booked up for that day you'll be assigned to an instructor from another group. Hence there'll be times when you might get the same instructor and times when you get someone completely new. I personally went for the default scheme because the lessons are cheaper and i find that having a wider selection of instructors can actually help your driving. Each instructor has their own style and they tend to pick on differnt things and offer different advice so you can sieve through and pick out the more relevant points. I've heard from some friends that fixing a group is actually quite good too cos you're more familiar with the instructors and they know your common mistakes, yet you still get different advice from the 4-5 different instructors in the group so there are pros and cons. Keep in mind that its about 6 dollars or so more per lesson if you fix a group! The instructors that took me for lessons were generally all pretty good! some were more friendly than others but they all do a good job in their teaching. The more friendly instructors make the effort to get to know you and i remember one instructor who took me for about 3-4 lessons and always ended up talking to me about football haha. Sad to say, i cant really remember any of their names but if i remember correctly my default group number was G6007.

The only instructors that are really bad in bbdc would be the private instructors that bbdc contracts to cover for the school instructors. I happen to get one of them while booking a lesson once and it was the most unproductive lesson i ever had. The car that was used is the instructors own and it smelled of rotting fish that day so i had to bear with the smell for a full 100 minutes and ended the lessons smelling like i had gone to the market. As for the instructor, he kept mubbling things to himself and then scolding me when i couldnt hear a word he said so in the end i just gave up listening to him and drove based on what i was taught by the previous school instructors. He also made me turn back into BBDC halfway through the lesson cos he had to settle something and made me wait in the car while he got out and went into bbdc. A terrible experience indeed! I guess you would have to be pretty unlucky to get one of these instructors. It only happened to me once in about 25 lessons. the school instructors also told me that these contracted private instructors can be quite terrible. This wont happen to you if you decide to opt for the fixed group/instructor scheme so no worries if you're opting for that!

All in all i would say that the bbdc experience was a good one. I really liked the convenience of the online booking system which allows you to both book and cancel without much fuss. I felt that some of the lessons were a little uneccessary and you dont actually need that many lessons to be ready for the test but i guess it is good practice and probably why passing rates for school candidates is higher than those learning under private instructors! You also dont have to make additional bookings for the circuit and all that so its much much more convenient and i think the school instructors are a lot more professional so you're able to learn better! I eventually passed my driving test on the first try and spent a total of $2296 at bbdc. I remember booking the 11.45am test timeslot and based on what i hear from the instructors that is one of the better timeslots for the test! it does not guarantee you a pass but the roads would be very empty at the time so that helps. Prologue

Every word of the blog entries published here were based on the experiences of the person who authored them. She was not authorized to write these blog entries as part of a review or advertorial. She learnt to drive on her own accord after several months of her mother's nagging.
She strongly believes everyone should decide for themselves which driving school to go to (or to learn the skill privately), which instructors to fix and what to think of the instructors and all associated with BBDC. These blog entries merely represent her point of view.

Just like how she does not attempt to answer the question of how many (if there are even any) yan dao instructors there are in BBDC, she does not intend to influence your decision in choosing where to learn driving at. Your attitude and desire to be a safe and competent driver determines whether you become one.

She chose to fish out most of the 60-odd entries originally published in her personal blog (PubliclyZihwye) because she felt it was an experience worth specially documenting, and also because she saw a 'market' in the number of hits she got from people typing "BBDC" into google.

Her experience at BBDC was a bucket of sugar with a lot of spice. As you will understand in due course, she was lucky in several cases and unlucky in others.

She remains eternally grateful to the instructors who taught her well and wishes them the best in all their future teaching endeavours. She has nothing more to say about the instructors who didn't care.

She passed her traffic police driving test on the 7th of January 2010. It was her second try and she was very sure she was going to fail. She may not have done fantastically but remains very proud of her achievement.

To all reading this, a good driver has to be decisive and so you should be, if you want to be a safe and competent driver. The best instructors for me may be the worst for you, and vice versa.

usually some words in red in a blue box would be there reminding you of your test date and time and to complete all test requirements before a specific date.

Cancelling training sessions

is quick and easy particularly if you do it more than 48hours in advance. try-sell is quite easy too and usually works out if you do it more than 24 hours in advance.

"booking without fixed instructor" and "booking with fixed instructor" will also be on the left hand bar. at least until you graduate.

it costs (as you can see) $3.21 per lesson if you fix a group and not an instructor. be prepared to pay another $5 more to fix an instructor. in cases where you fail to get the instructor you've fixed (which happened every single time for me), you will get your $5 back.

New Identity

anyway on a lighter note the doorbell rang at the start of henin-dementieva's second set. i am not very sorry that i look so crappy in my driving licence because NOBODY goes for driving test thinking s/he's going to pass so who on earth would bother dressing up and bringing a comb/make up for photo-taking??? (only those who usually doll up for driving lessons, crazy people with too much make-up to spare!) i am thankful enough i was wearing contacts that day. but that was cos i realized that specs get in the way when im parking.

i dont think ive blogged this yet:i am still quite angry with bbdc for defacing my result slip. whoever was in charge of updating student particulars must have felt the need to exert his 'power' by drawing random crap on everybody's result slips. fancy people doing that to YOUR o/a level result slip. i think you'll flip. in fact this is worse because i dont get a certificate with all the mistakes listed on it. and i am supposed to 'improve on the mistakes listed' on that list. looking back technically bbdc had no business asking for my result slip. tsk. should've argued. hahaha.

i think this is going to be my MOST TREASURED CARD ever. apart from atm/credit card for obvious reasons. i probably wouldnt care about my IC half as much because my identity (like yours) was conferred by the state/society i was born into. whereas i had to work really hard for this one.

Au Revoir

bbdc yesterday. rushed there and to outram right after i bought my p-plates ($10.20) and passed the cards. the woman at counter 2 refused to help me pass the cards and told me to pass them to the instructors myself. like yes, i am totally going to wait until the 3 of them walk past. which is never because i have never seen mr chan/hau kw outside of driving lesson. thankfully this other woman at the help desk was more agreeable. i hope they got the cards man.

eh, i just realised it is so rare to have the road empty like that cos usually crossing it is hell.

quite glad i never have to go back. no more long 174 rides (which were quite comfortable, most of the time) and bus-changes to 187/985 (yucky smrt buses that are dirty and full of smelly secondary school kids). no more waiting to cross the road and having to endure cigarette smoke at the entrance of bbdc. no more having to book a cab just cos its raining heavily. no more super-long 188 bus rides from bbdc to harbourfront. now the last part is quite sad cos the bus is usually empty and i love long and comfortable bus rides. and of course i will miss driving on a regular basis because driving is fun; until a cyclist appears.

BBDC Experience - in review

This entry was typed on a whim right after I got my licence! :D I will always remember the joy I felt when I passed. Especially since I didn't expect myself to!

WARNING: EXTREMELY LONG AND INCOHERENT ENTRY AHEAD. we're at the tail-end of my bbdc review service.

in every effort to change my luck for driving i took a bus to bbdc yesterday. for the previous i cabbed. this time i took the usual 174-187/985 route and discovered that the last four songs on yoga's sophomore album totally rule. i suppose experience plays a part in the way you feel about certain events like exams and driving tests because i arrived at bbdc a lot calmer than the last time. i was surprised to see people mugging for driving test whilst in the waiting room (with the nature dvd playing).

warm-up was awful. i mounted a kerb during s-course (whats new!) and got sandwiched between traffic from two sides while making a right turn. also failed to confirm safety during parallel parking and a lot of other random, safety-related, expensive-in-terms-of-points stuff. the instructor asked me if i was nervous, and i said no, because i know ill fail. after what mr chan said about his class4 test and after what my dad said about not fearing failure i decided that i shall just go in and drive like it was an evaluation and not a test.

still i think i subconsciously believed i could pass because still in an effort to change my luck i stopped listening to music earlier while in the waiting room (which is damn annoying cos the testers talk DAMN LOUDLY to compete with each other during debriefing). all that i could think of just before my name was called was really what route ill get because i think ill be damned if i got route 3 again. in the end i got route 1 -__- which is horribly, like 70%, similar to route 3. both are at teck whye.

and the best thing is i had a tester who couldnt stop talking prior to the test. he made me check my details like twice on his tablet pc and gave a lot of advice when we got into the car. like "remember what you've learnt, do it slowly, and just do your best. dont think too much, the route doesnt matter i will give you instructions." etc. my previous tester merely said "so i call you rosel ah? ok move off." big diff.

(im going into details here just to document the experience)

i admit after my first test i decided it was a bad idea for bbdc instructors to give way to test cars because during driving lesson nobody gives way to you and nobody's going to give way to you on the roads outside either. still i really appreciate the TWO instructors who gave way to me yesterday because there were just far too many test cars yesterday (shouldnt they limit the number of people taking test at the same time seriously). one of them was mr chan. i was entering #4 (s-course) at the start of my test through a right turn and he stopped his (student's) car right before the s-course entrance so i could go. mr chan is that kinda instructor he'll go all out to help the test cars. and he said other instructors do the same but evidently something has changed because the only other instructor who bothered to give way was this class 2 one who held up traffic so i could turn out to the roads at #50.

anyway my confidence went up a lot after s-course because i DIDNT STRIKE/MOUNT KERB!!!! as i was exiting i was silently telling myself "omg i am going to pass". :) after that was vertical parking which was fine too. parallel parking was beautiful, probably my best attempt ever. my car was very far away from pole A and this is only thanks to shi fu who taught me how to keep my car away from the pole i knocked down during the first test.

the strange thing is that hau kw made it so clear to me that once the tester brakes for you or takes over steering basically you're dead BUT my tester was controlling the brake when we made an illegal right turn in the circuit. -jawdrop-

everything was ok until the ramp, which was disappointing cos i braked too late and the wheels kinda slammed onto the ramp. besides, my car wasnt straight, which is what ive been practicing since forever. i probably let hau kw down on this one, sorry. but i didnt lose any points here surprisingly!

as with my last test i didnt have to do the slope. i honestly think they should just remove the slope from the 3A test criteria and save it for manual cars only. there is no need anyway because the auto car is not supposed to roll back, ever.

i cannot believe he started the test with an e-brake really. that was so surprising because very, very few testers make candidates do e-brake.

then came the road test which was horrible. i really thought i was going to fail because i had to lane change SO MANY TIMES and all the cars just werent giving way to me. again i know i cannot expect it but does it really take a lot for people to give way to a test car. i mean how many test cars do you see man! i promise to give way to all the test cars i see in future because of this experience. the worst part was there were so many other test cars (and test cars dont ever give way to other test cars for obvious reasons).

nearer the end of the test route there was a stupid bicycle in front of me. i HATE bicycles because my first instinct is to slow down thinking they'll make a turn and get out of my way but they dont ever. overtaking is supposed to be easy but i hate overtaking near bends/traffic light junctions because you're not supposed to within a certain distance (and i always cannot gauge that distance). ended up getting 6 points for road hogging. bloody bicycle. i wish cyclists would limit their habits to only parks and take public transport whenever else.

anyway when we got back he just told me to wait for him outside and i felt good about how i performed BUT i still wasnt sure if i could pass particularly since he kept taking out his tablet pc. everyone else in the waiting room looked awfully gloom, like this guy next to me. when his tester came he said something like "today you drove very badly ah." sad, sad. i hope he passes the next time!

when my tester came though the first thing he said was "so how do you think you drove today?"

me: urm, it was ok?

tester: ok ah. why you stop behind the bicycle!

me: oops.

tester: you overtake already must come back quickly otherwise count as road-hogging.

me: i thought it was near the traffic light junction.

tester: yeah but the bicycle so small just come out go back in already.

me: (quickly remembers what shi fu said about agreeing with the tester no matter what) oh. ok i see i will do so in future.

tester: so how many times?

me: two.

tester: two ah. how, wanna come back?

me: dont want! haha.

tester: dont want ah. (hands me the result slip) well done. you go down watch video then come back up.

me: oh come back up?

tester: dont want license ah.

actually the whole time we were talking i was just peering to see what was written on the paper. imagine my (silent) joy when i saw the "dear sir/madam" part was different from the previous test. "we would like to extend a warm welcome to you to the motoring society" indeed. motoring society?! society?! like, secret society-society?!
i took a really long time to realise i passed, because i was so prepared to fail i even booked a lesson with hau kw in march. but i was very happy to see that shi fu was happy for me when he walked past the briefing room while i was watching the stupid ix shen drink-driving video. its gory as hell and i hated every bit of it. besides, they should get christopher lee to do that video instead. but i digress.

there were several, to use driving terminology, turning points over the course of my journey in becoming a qualified 3A driver. i remember when i first started out it was like damn fun and everything, until i started having lessons with sim kh, ng hl and shi fu. at that time i hated shi fu because i thought he was damn freaking unreasonable. more on that later.

the first turning point came when i had this manual instructor (lu lb) for one lesson. yes, the one who told me "现在所有的车都是auto所以你学auto是个明确的选择!" he was the one who taught me braking techniques even though alex tan was supposed to have taught me that the previous lesson. that same entry tells you why i hated shi fu. mr lu's damn funny and he kept laughing at me for not getting 3 As for my alevels.

the second came when i found out mr chan hy was in g8001, which was my group at that time. before that i hated every lesson with g8001 and was on the verge of changing group although i didnt know to what group. after i found out mr chan was in g8001 i stopped complaining so much and it was around the same time that somehow i stopped hating ronald siew, aka shi fu. i am not sure if i would have hated g8001 less if i had hau kw earlier but basically i stayed in the group because of mr chan.

the third turning point came when i had my last stage 4 lesson with hau kw. prior to this i was having almost every lesson with shi fu & mr chan and i was driving fine with them. it was here that i realised you cannot just have one or two instructors because it is not enough to be able to drive well with some people. you have to drive well with anyone in the car, whether you are familiar with them or not. every instructor has their strengths and weaknesses and i would say you should have about two to three instructors who are familiar with YOUR strengths and weaknesses who each make up for the other's weaknesses. which is why i dont believe in private! as i said in this entry there are instructors who care more about skill, those who care more about safety and those who care about both. i cannot emphasize how strict hau kw is with safety which is why i wanted him for my last lesson. to digress, my advice is to not waste time with instructors who dont care at all. ie alex tan. fix the good instructors as soon as you find them. you pay more but less in the long run (each driving test costs $150+, fixing an instructor costs $8 per lesson - you do the math).

i just cannot thank the four instructors mentioned above enough, really. particularly mr chan for his patience (he has never lost this, not even once, with me). there was a time not too long ago where i really couldnt parallel park AT ALL and it was mr chan who changed everything about it. i dont think theres any part of circuit and road that he didnt help me improve on. it was because he was nice but at the same time genuinely interested in helping his students improve that i felt i could really trust him to make me a safe and competent driver. i mean you could be a really good instructor but if you're unapproachable and fierce like sim kh im not ever going to be able to ask you anything, so no point! the irony is that mr chan looks really fierce. but hes really the nicest instructor around. he remembers all my strengths and weaknesses despite having seeing so many students everyday. its really amazing. shi fu is really nice too but he doesnt bother talking much apart from driving technique. maybe hes not very sociable - he only became nicer to me when he talked to me about booking test date.

i think if shi fu finds out that i had one improper (sharp) turning yesterday during my test hes going to be quite disappointed because he taught me all my turnings. learning to do left and right turns in itself was a turning point because arguably it is the hardest part of learning driving. circuit and all are really tough too but they all require turning and you only learn how to gauge how much you need to turn after some time of driving. learning left and right turns gave me that experience. also, thanks to the same person who gave me long talks on how to find a good test timing. i am most impressed with his ability to remember every detail of my past driving lessons with him. heres to you, shi fu!

and the last person deserves the least thanks among everybody hahahaha. only because i only had four lessons with him. he did change my whole safety-check regime and i lost very few points for safety so i cannot not thank him. also he was the one who made me finally able to tell whether my car is straight or not during directional change and vertical parking. i suppose i will never ever find out if he was really falling asleep when i was parallel parking during my last lesson with him but thank you mr hau. (calling him mr hau is just weird cos hes damn young.) im sure you'll make an awesome instructor once you grow out of your childish nonsense. (im not joking.)

it has been a good 2 months since my first test and i couldnt get my confidence back on track right through yesterday. if i failed yesterday ill still be complaining about not being able to get back to the form i was at for my first test. yes i still think i shouldn't have lost that psychological battle with myself during the first test but i only passed yesterday thanks to the above-mentioned and more...

i also want to thank the instructors i hate, because if not for them i wouldnt have the urge to pass as soon as possible so i wont ever run the risk of running into them again. sim kh, ng hl and alex tan. really i think sim kh needs to change his teaching style. young people 吃软不吃硬 nowadays so his army-style teaching doesnt work anymore. ng hl needs to stop wasting lesson time by stopping for toilet break. alex tan SERIOUSLY needs a reality check - his students are only passing cos of the other instructors.

i would also like to wish all students currently under g8033 ALL THE BEST - not that i know any of them. i shant say anything about the original instructors but i am sure with the addition of mr chan, hau kw & shi fu, you guys wouldnt need to fear failing 4 or 5 times.

and final concluding remarks on bbdc...

thank goodness you people decided to do away with the "pay $20 to open a fixed group account" thing. please do something about your system though cos you guys are just losing out on opportunities to earn more money whenever your student doesnt get the instructor she fixes. besides i would have spent this entry complaining if i didnt pass yesterday.

i think bbdc gives you a very good feeling at the start because their service was quite good but for some reason something changed and now all the counter staff all look like they've been deprived of their bonus or something.

i reckon you cannot choose an instructor or a driving school based on their passing rates because the driving test depends on much more than your instructor's teaching although it does matter. its a mental game for most people. every instructor is different but the good thing about going to a school and not a private instructor even though the latter is cheaper is that you can complain about them (alex had loads of problems with her private instructor's attitude), take your pick from so many instructors all with their own teaching style, change cars, warm up before each test and the most important, get to take as long as you want in the circuit.

i find it very sad that private students dont get all the time in the world in the circuit because the circuit is the hardest part. i even had time to try parallel parking without the pole for fun ok?

i have always felt that people should choose driving schools based on distance from their home and not reputation or whatever because that is all that matters. i STILL think that way. so only go to bbdc if you live in or near the west, or like me, sad and central.

and if you're here to find out if bbdc has any yan dao instructors, i am pleased to inform you that there is one. HAHAHAHA. but there are several others who are good and not yan dao and that matters so much more.

and to end off the bbdc review service in numbers (because i know so many people are reading this only because they googled 'bbdc'), i spent $2,707.58, including theory lessons, theory practice sessions, driving practical lessons, test fees and to open a bbdc account. in total i had 39 practical lessons (9 with mr chan, 9 with shi fu), 20 theory training sessions including 1 driving simulator ($11.77) which was awfully unnecessary. an average bbdc student would probably spend much less particularly if they are willing to study harder for the theory tests - i hate mugging so i just spammed theory practice sessions which means i spend time doing typical test questions as practices so by the time i go for my tests i already know the question based on the answers and not the other way round HAHA. i basically memorize answers to questions. i passed both on my first try under 5min both times! each theory practice session costs $2.14 for 45min and as a bbdc student you get more booklets than a private candidate. at bbdc each practical lesson costs $59.92 including gst. if you fix a group, you pay $3 more, and if you fix an instructor, you pay $5 on top of that $3. a practical test costs $156.96 including gst. the only bad thing about being a school candidate is that you need to attend 4 theory lessons (each cost $17.12 but those theory lessons are not totally useless and theres this theory instructor called patrick sum- hes really damn funny). each theory test costs $6.

i also want to thank everyone who has followed my journey to get my driver's license since 24th july 2009. its been a great four months.

milli, who thought i failed because i put "trey i *still* need a ride to your faraway birthday chalet next friday" on facebook. i saw her comment at like 3am when i woke up.

sam, who messaged "wipers on the left headlights on the right" when i complained that it was raining before my test. what good advice! :)

ben who, along with several others, insisted that knocking down the pole during parking is immediate failure. IT IS NOT, ITS TEN POINTS.

my dad who offered to buy a $92000 toyota camry last night.

and everyone else who offered their support and their sincerest congratulations when i passed, including ado and her dairy queen ice cream.

so, i passed!

i know 16 points is very high but this is not olevels and besides i truly dont think he should've faulted me for failing to check safety during directional change (4 points) and steering while vehicle is stationary (2 points). also, darn that stupid bicycle for causing my road hogging (6 points). we should have a lane just for bicycles as they do in china. and if people who are supposedly very smart like quan you (HAHA) get 18 points i dont think my 16 points is that bad. and in every effort not to let my instructors down i will do my very best to be a safe and competent driver. :)

as of today i am going to be completely alcohol free, with the sole exception of those in food/desserts, so i will never ever run the risk of drink-driving. hold me to my word.

let my last word be a big discovery about why i fared so poorly during my last driving lesson.

THE FREAKING SEAT WASN'T RAISED TO THE SAME LEVEL AS IT IS USUALLY so i had problems gauging the turning points and all. not because i was lousy. realised this like yesterday after i finished the circuit test.

gonna buy three thank you cards. actually i dont know what im gonna write in hau kw's.

Pre-test Nerves (II)

i shall not lapse into googling stuff about driving because i will just read and start worrying like crap. it is what i did the night before my previous test anyhow. unfortunately i just googled something about s-course. i shall just go really slowly and try not to get an immediate failure. i think its very sad cos testers usually ask you to do s-course first, and if i fail there i not only fail, i also waste the opportunity to practice.


and remember not to turn back too quickly when im exiting crank course.


you know i think my problem is i take it too seriously. must take it with a large pinch of salt. like fail then fail its not like i cannot afford it. hahaha. though i seriously cannot afford the time, emotional baggage and perpetual concern that i may not get the instructor i want every lesson.


truthfully i wonder if i will be able to recover and get back to the standard i was at before my first test by my next test, if there is one. remember my first lesson back after the test? it was with alex tan and i believe after that he probably considered quitting his job.

so while i was happily at my com after i typed the previous entry, watching 老友狗狗, trying to open yoga's album (it is still unopened as i type this) and having my beehoon lunch at 11:56am , it suddenly dawned on me to check bbdc's website to confirm the time for my last driving lesson cos yesterday when i checked my organizer on my phone, the time stated was 2:20pm, which is impossible cos bbdc's timings are like 12:20, 2:10, 4pm. i only take these three slots. so i logged in.

please imagine my shock when i clicked 'booking statement' and saw: 6 Jan 2010 Wednesday 12:20 - 2pm.

I FREAKED OUT OF COURSE and jumped out, changed and went without showering. disgusting but true. booked a cab which sped (i didnt ask him to) all the way to bbdc. cost me $12.50. but i got there like 3min late, which is fantastic considering bbdc is like far side of the world.

everything else that followed however was just a nightmare. shi fu (no this is not the nightmarish part) was terribly disheartened by my poor performance in the circuit. i was striking kerbs turning too quickly driving too fast. s-course was atrocious. i was and am awfully discouraged.

seriously i strongly believe i might still be able to drive decently tomorrow (even if i dont pass) because the past three lessons were genuinely fine. but i dont know about s-course.

SIGH.

trust me i hate being this unprepared. but EITHER WAY i have wasted the $100+ (because theres no refund if you cancel your test) so i might as well just go for it. i just feel awfully bad for my instructors cos they really put a lot of effort into teaching me but im just not there yet.

i have just booked a lesson with hau kw (but it'll probably be someone else) for 1st march. that will be the day i go down to renew my PDL and my first lesson before my next test, whenever that may be. he will have to teach me parallel parking without the poles. if i renew my PDL on first march i will have till sept to pass the stupid test, but i intend to pass by Rafa's birthday (3 june) because thats when the bbdc account expires - I AM NOT PAYING BBDC ANY MORE MONEY.

Again and again

anyway im damn edgy cos its my last driving lesson today but i can still think of a whole list of problems i need to work on:

+ s-course
+ turning back too quickly during crank-course
+ CHECKING THE REAR VIEW MIRROR
+ lane change
+ parallel parking (quite ok but you know, murphy's law)
+ after crank-course come out parallel park
+ ramp

and i just realised theres this ONE parallel parking lot near s-course #4 and i havent tried that before.

yesterday i actually turned the steering in the wrong direction during parallel park.

im so dead seriously. i should just pray very hard i dont get immediate failures and more than 30 points. i hope i fail at like 20 points, so at least its not too bad for the confidence, which is already very low. i really dont know how much effort is going to take for me to even go for lessons if i still fail tomorrow. im going to be damn demoralized cos driving's, really, such a bitch.

Pre-second-test woes

i was super, super pissed off with bbdc today. so yesterday's lesson was mr chan instead of shi fu and i was ok with it. the first lesson today was supposed to be with hau kw but i got mr chan instead and still i was ok with it. but i started to worry cos i knew sooner or later i would be getting the other instructors from g8033 and TRUE ENOUGH the second lesson, which was supposed to be with mr chan, i got this guy (ong wh). so he was nice but at this stage i would really appreciate an instructor i know. besides, BOTH hau kw and shi fu were teaching during my lesson. the worst thing is that while they refund me the $5 for not getting the instructor i want, they dont refund me the $3 for fixed group.

tomorrow is my last lesson and i am supposed to have it with hau kw. i chose hau kw for my last lesson for a reason, it wasn't random. hes the strictest (that i know of) with safety checks. he is also the least encouraging but i suppose i dont need the encouragement since the last time everyone told me i was going to pass and i failed.

NOW IF I DONT GET HAU KW TOMORROW, or mr chan or shi fu, im going to be very, very upset with bbdc.

anyhow that ong wh guy was really funny he kept asking me about cars, like what car im going to drive, what car my dad drives, and what i did with the result slip of the first test. t'was quite amusing. but he was using his phone during lesson and i didnt quite like that. for the record, i wouldnt like it either if the tester used his phone during the test.

talking about testers, trey was talking about his failed driving tests and apparently the second one he felt the tester was unfair so they gave him *two* testers for his third, which he passed. now thats quite amazing.

before & after

anyway i am scared!! i am going for my first driving lesson in a month in a bit, and i am SCARED!!!

i have decided that after thursday im going to take a long break from driving this whole sem and not renew my PDL until april and hopefully book a test for june, before my bbdc account expires. should the test date be in june, i will go back to driving only after exams end in april. ok that sounds like a big risk again because i'd only have a month to learn the whole parking-without-poles but if i spam lessons in may i suppose it should be fine, right? besides, with 6 modules this sem i dont actually want to waste time travelling to and fro bbdc anymore, and i really want to take a break from driving. i think its plain sad that i didnt pass on my first try cos that was the only time i had confidence for driving. now the thought of driving tests just scares me.

and you realise i am making plans for my next test already... hahaha driving is a joke.

woohoo!! driving turned out alright. it was quite fun actually cos i had mr chan. yayness. actually i booked shi fu (cos mr chan had no slot available) so imagine my happiness when i saw mr chan's name on the slip. i mean im ok with shi fu but mr chan's still better so. besides, now i should get my $5 refunded.

im just really worried the same thing happens for my next three lessons and i end up getting instructors i didnt book. its ok if i get any of the three (shi fu, mr chan, hau kw) but if i get anyone other than that im going to flip - for obvious reasons.

anyway he was really impressed i could still remember everything after almost a month of not driving. i was really impressed too, but i was more amused cos he told me his story of how he got his class 4 license (apparently theres this school in jurong which teaches that, and its not like the normal driving schools cos the instructors have their legs up on the seat and all that) and also some gossip about the previous g8001 group.

he was saying from the looks of it i clearly didnt like sim kh or ng hl because "otherwise wouldnt have come to this group (g8033)". so true. i admitted i didnt like alex tan as well. i am secretly damn happy alex tan is teaching honda jazz cos no matter what happens i will never get him as my instructor, ever again. GOOD RIDDANCE. he also said a lot of students like shi fu & hau kw very much. i suppose i will never understand how some members of our society function, but it is way more acceptable than if he had told me a lot of students like sim kh, alex tan or ng hl.

by the way, i tried parking without the poles today, just for fun. it felt very different but the theory is the same and, surprise surprise! it still does not aid parking along public roads because they put something else there in place of the poles. -_-"

Hau KW

oh and by the way, bbdc 'settled' my issues and found me a 4th session that is not at night. unfortunately i have two with hau kw - i do not actually want to have any sessions with hau kw at all. but nevermind. and g8033 is a honda city group! which means i am safe even if i fail the test. boo!

Looking back I cannot quite understand why I was trying to avoid Hau KW. But what surprises me is the fact that hes still an instructor today (Jan 2012). Hes so young - or maybe he just looks young - you just wouldn't expect someone of that age to i) stay in a job for long and ii) stay as a driving instructor for long. Maybe he really has a passion for cars, who knows!

ohmygod. i am starting to wonder if it'll be cheaper for me to sue bbdc than pay them so much and still fail my driving tests. then again maybe not.

so the three instructors are in my group, as mentioned above. but i can only find FOUR slots before my test on the 7th. i feel like dying, because not only is four insufficient, one of them is at night, which is costing me $77, and is not a good idea because i have never driven at night and my test is the next day - in the morning! simply means i am going to fail anyway, and if i am going to fail, why am i wasting money on night slots and booking fixed instructor yada yada? besides, the earliest next test date is 10 march! surprise surprise. thats the first date (if i dont remember wrongly) on which traffic police driving tests will be conducted without the poles. i might as well take it easy (since i have to renew my pdl anyway) and start learning parking from scratch.

maybe d_'s idea of having revision lessons with a private instructor is not a bad one! but how am i going to find an instructor (who uses the honda city) at such short notice?!

"Yandao" BBDC Instructors

I will always remember the day I logged into Nuffnang and saw the words typed into Google along with "BBDC instructors". YANDAO? Seriously? You people look for good-looking instructors when choosing a driving instructor!?

it has come to my attention that apart from alpha inventions, random people are coming to my blog after typing "yandao bbdc instructor" into google.


so to satisfy their curiosity: there are no 'yandao' instructors @ bbdc.


FINE, it depends on how you define 'yandao'. perhaps this would give you an idea. besides, maybe some of them were good-looking in their younger days. but i must say the instructors dont really look the way they do in the photos. both shi fu & hau kw look VERY different and chan hy's hair is a lot longer, for example, and i almost think thats either not alex tan in the photo or ive been seeing the faux one all this while. sim kh however looks just like he does: some evil taxi driver. -_-"


go look at the current instructors of my new group though (g8033) - they look weird!

Today is the 2nd of January 2012 (yes I copied and pasted the entries and also saved it under the original date so as to facilitate your reading pleasure) and while doing this entry I clicked on that link above. The groups have indeed changed again, but my three instructors are still in the same group. They are now in a GOLD group (!!!) because they have higher passing rates. Proud of my instructors. Can't believe, however, that Alex Tan is also in a gold group - the most expensive group!

I also find it very funny that after 2+ years, the 'feedback' link on BBDC's website is still not working. HAHA.

good day at driving

DRIVING was awesome. surprisingly i drove very well despite having alex tan as my instructor. i was actually in an awful mood when i saw 'tan jj' on my allocation slip. unfortunately im still not up to the standard i was at before my first test. i still believe i was driving really well before my test. except maybe im safer now cos i keep checking rear view mirrors. my parking is not very good anymore cos i cant seem to get the car straight. again! i solved the problem with hau kw before my first test. thankfully i can still park decently well without sacrificing any poles.

went to fix my group so as of today, i am no longer under g8001. i feel like im betraying the group, but no! i am the most loyal, since three of the six instructors of g8001 are supposed to be in the new group (g8033). i hope there are no new changes to groupings cos im still worried about the car changes. they say they'll get me the honda city for my three revision lessons & the test though!

i just figured today was my last lesson with alex tan forever and ever, and ill never run the risk of getting ng hl and sim kh again! having the autonomy to decide who will teach me and not have to be told my fate by the stupid system a few minutes before each lesson feels quite good. although looking back at how i started out, it is terribly ironic that i am paying extra to fix instructors from g8001. that said, i have never had problems with chan hy & hau kw. in fact i think the only reason why i remained in g8001 was after i found out chan hy was in the group. though of course thereafter shi fu became more like a shi fu.

Shifu

ronald siew for driving. cue laugh-out-loud response. this is the last time im gonna blog his name cos from now on, hes going to be known as my shi fu. (besides, i cannot believe ALL OF YOU reading my blog actually know him by name already.) the moment he saw me he came out of the car despite the rain and asked me "what happened?" even before he took the allocation slip. 由此可见 hes been wondering that since he saw me the other day at the front door. im wondering why the instructors dont communicate with each other though - i mean, shouldnt he know that im also under chan hy (i digress: if ronald siew is my shi fu i dont know what to call chan hy, but lets leave that for now. chan hy is not very shi fu-ish but he has obviously taught me a lot too) since i use g118 most of the time? shouldnt they ask around whether their (shared) student passed/failed? maybe shi fu doesnt have that many friends cos everytime i see him around bbdc hes either reading newspaper or roaming around alone. haha. whereas chan hy, like hau kw, is practically friends with everyone in bbdc. (hau kw does really weird things to his fellow instructor friends during lesson. weird, childish crap that i wont type here.)

and i realised shi fu doesnt quite care about the upcoming changes in instructor groupings whereas chan hy & hau kw appear to have rather strong feelings towards it. i dont even think they know their groupings yet (but i do, which is funny).

anyhow, i have decided that ronald siew's my shi fu because 1) most instructors have this thing about "my" students and "others". i figure ronald siew/chan hy would consider me their student while hau kw, ng hl and alex tan, dont. 2) hes the only one who showed a genuine interest in knowing what exactly happened during the test, right down to every single point i lost. chan hy too but ronald siew asked a LOT of questions about the mistakes i made. 3) according to drama serials, particularly chinese/ hong kong ones, teacher-disciple relationships (师徒关系) often start out on very negative notes - like cannot see eye-to-eye on several things etc. the other way is if the teacher saves the disciple's life as in 少年四大名捕 but thats a bit exaggerated for driving lessons. lastly, 4) ronald siew can seriously remember a lot about my strengths/weaknesses in terms of driving. it amazes and impresses me and really shows he cares about my learning progress.



i am very amused cos i just read through all my entries labelled 'bbdc' and its damn funny the things i said about shi fu in the past. i guess we just change our opinions after getting to know somebody better. besides, hes a lot nicer now than in the past. also, i note that i have always hated alex tan, and that i used to hate g8001, until one fine day i got chan hy, and then my opinion of the group changed.

actually the very fact that i can actually parallel park is (in its entirety) thanks to chan hy, so actually he should be the real shi fu. but its too weird being able to joke around with your shi fu.

Driving tuition

had lunch, rushed to driving. the cab driver was amusing & very nice. on the PIE he suddenly said to me, "did you see that?"


me (listening to jay chou on my ipod): huh?
driver: lorry cannot keep right lane!
me (thinking: uhhh okayyy???): oh
driver: lorry is considered slow-moving vehicle. if he gets caught sure got points.
me: haha okay.

after a long time, nearer bbdc, he continued:

driver: see some drivers drive slowly but like to keep right lane. road hogging! very dangerous you know.
me: yeah
driver: and then some drivers not very experienced they dont look far. must look far otherwise got obstruction you dont know.
me (thinking about myself not looking far whenever i drive): hahaha yeah.
driver: all this instructor got teach lah hor?

driving tuition.

i was terribly annoyed during driving lesson though. i just felt damn irritated with hau kw (and you know i am ok with hau kw). i hate the way he counts points. i rather instructors teach me with the hope of making me a safe and competent driver not just so i can pass my test, perhaps? i dont know. its not the first time he was counting points (and his best friend alex tan also counts points cos thats the only thing he can do) but today it just annoyed me. also, i think he was falling asleep during my parallel park. i couldnt be sure cos he had his sunglasses on (thats the reason why he wears sunglasses when theres no sun). i was very pissed off when i saw that he was nodding off. i am sorry if he wasnt, but hes not the nodding-in-recognition-of-having-done-the-right-steps type. if i was sure he was nodding off i'd have complained already. but for now, there are bigger/more important things to complain about.

i walked to the counter, nicely and calmly and talked to the guy about the whole changing instructor nonsense. he assured me and said they'll get the lessons for me before the test. then he passed me the list of new groupings for me to look for the instructors i am comfortable with and i found out good & bad news. ronald siew, chan hy & hau kw are in the same group. thats the good news. the bad news is that their new group is a honda jazz group which means if i fix them as my instructors i will have three days to get used to the honda jazz.

the honda jazz is significantly different in terms of size and height from the honda city if you're wondering. its a different car altogether.

by this time i was super pissed off. there is no way i am going to use another type of car for practice three days before my driving test, and i am already making a compromise by paying to fix a group. i got annoyed and asked to speak to the helpdesk guy's boss but he told me "i will forward it to her" and promised me he'll try his best to get me that car and those instructors. he better, otherwise i will find a way to talk to his boss.

(on a very random side note i think ronald siew, chan hy and hau kw must be very glad to no longer be under sim kh's leadership.) poor ronald siew cos i am still avoiding him. saw him again today but he was in the car and thankfully i wasnt using g118. i am sorry, i am just too embarrassed for having failed my traffic police driving test.

WHICH D_____ ALSO FAILED. she took the test today and messaged me some questions about driving while i was driving. when she replied after her warm-up i talked to her a bit and thought she was going to pass but she got something like 48 points and needed five attempts to do parallel park. i was damn amused when she told me, i couldnt stop laughing as i walked into vivo city. thankfully she wasnt offended cos shes amused too.

Anyone is better than Alex Tan

ng hl for driving after a terrible cab ride in which the shameless taxi driver took an atrociously long route. the worst thing was that chan hy was slacking away at the side (haha) presumably cos the student who booked that lesson didnt come and bbdc's stupid enough not to automatically gimme his lesson. haha. granted, ng hl's actually ok. just damn naggy and he speaks super slowly. besides, anyone is better than alex tan. im just spoilt by the g118 instructors. 3 more lessons before i get to fix my instructors.

the behind-the-scenes

When I learnt that its wiser to sign up for driving at the start of the year, and not at the end.

still, driving was awesome. chan hy. he told me a lot of stuff i cannot blog about (cos bbdc sucks, remember) but he also told me funny stuff like how the instructors' year-end test encompasses 70 questions (they're only allowed to get 4 wrong) and a practical test with everything under a time limit. in his own words, during the test even instructors mount kerb & hit pole because they're all trying to do it under the time limit. he also told me about the parking without pole business and apparently they havent determined the turning points and all that. but he said the instructors all know its better to do it without pole because when you go out there are no poles to help you but nobody has said anything for so long cos poles = easier.

the moment i walked into bbdc i saw ronald siew but i walked away quickly so he wouldnt have a chance to say anything to me. he had the "EH??" look on his face so im guessing he doesnt know i failed my test. ive been wishing i dont get him cos i think its superbly embarrassing that i failed my test. for some reason though it only occurred to me today that the only two instructors who remember and take note of each student's strengths and weaknesses are him & chan hy. they've damn good memory and you could say they care. so please please please please may bbdc do the right thing for once and put all three of them (+ hau kw) in the same group. if i have to choose between three of them i really wouldnt know who to choose. probably chan hy since im trying to avoid ronald siew. erps.

on a totally random note, the instructors in each group are further put into pairs to share a car each. for my group, the pairings are: ng hl & sim kh (g117), ronald siew & chan hy (g118) and alex tan & hau kw (g119). thank goodness i am under g118 most of the time. i wonder how hau kw can stand alex tan. heck, HOW CAN ANYONE STAND ALEX TAN. i would like to know if anyone has actually fixed him as their instructor.

chan hy says if i have any friends who wanna learn driving at bbdc, i am to tell you to sign up at the start of the year and not at the end cos they break up groups every year-end.

Confidence or lack thereof

For sometime following my failed test I had confidence issues in terms of driving. And when you drive, confidence is the most important. It's always a bad thing to be under or over confident when driving. Both ways you'll be a hazard to fellow road users.


hau kw for driving! considering i booked the lesson last night, im lucky. but i really think im losing this whole driving thing cos i just cant seem to enjoy it anymore and the confidence is just not there. very erps i know. but true. i dunno how.
